Baby Bell Pepper

Baby Lewis is now the size of a bell pepper (about 5 inches long, and growing by the second!). Here's what Baby Center has to say about our baby at 18 weeks:

Head to rump, your baby is about 5 1/2 inches long and he weighs almost 7 ounces. He's busy flexing his arms and legs — movements that you'll start noticing more and more in the weeks ahead. His blood vessels are visible through his thin skin, and his ears are now in their final position, although they're still standing out from his head a bit. A protective covering of myelin is beginning to form around his nerves, a process that will continue for a year after he's born. If you're having a girl, her uterus and fallopian tubes are formed and in place. If you're having a boy, his genitals are noticeable now, but he may hide them from you during an ultrasound.

Last week my mom came with me for my monthly checkup. Dr. Kees was out of town so I met with Dr. Russel. I think it's a good thing to meet other doctors in the office because you never know which one will be delivering our baby! She took me through the usual tests and then got ready to listen to the heartbeat. My mom immediately teared up at the whooshing beat of baby's heart. I started to laugh out of pure joy and excitement. Mixed in with the heartbeat we heard a kind of crashing noise. I thought it was because I was laughing, so I tried to hold still. Dr. Russel said, "It looks like it wants to be left alone! That's the sound of the baby kicking." Every time Dr. Russel pushed the Doppler wand onto my belly we heard a crash! It was like the baby was saying "Leave me alone! I'm sleeping in here!". I think this baby has an attitude!

As far as my feeling the baby kick, there have been a couple times where I've felt a slight movement that felt like a bubble rising. I wish so badly that I could feel a movement that I knew without a doubt was the baby. It would be a good reminder that it's in there and doing fine. Although I'm sure I'll be saying something totally different a few months from now when it feels like the baby is tap dancing on my spleen!
